Dr Simon Hogg serves as Reader in Metallurgy and Head of the Department of Materials at Loughborough University, where he also holds the role of Postgraduate Taught (PGT) Director of Studies since 2021. He joined the institution as a lecturer in metallurgy in 2006 and maintains active research and administrative leadership within the materials engineering discipline.
His educational foundation includes a BEng from Sheffield Hallam University and a PhD from the University of Sheffield's Department of Engineering Materials. Prior academic appointments featured postdoctoral research at Sheffield University investigating semi-solid metal processing feasibility, followed by Oxford University research on Al-Li alloys for airframe applications.
Dr Hogg's research program centers on advanced metallurgical techniques with particular emphasis on aerospace alloy development and industrial metal processing methodologies. His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical engineering applications, especially in lightweight structural materials for aviation.
