Dr. Simon Hirzel is a Researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, specializing in energy efficiency in industry and trade, and the energy performance of products. Since 2008, he has worked in the Energy Efficiency business unit of the Department of Energy Technologies and Energy Systems, and since 2020, he has served as a Fraunhofer research manager. His research focuses on evaluating energy-efficient technologies, barriers to their implementation, and designing policy measures to enhance energy efficiency.
Before joining Fraunhofer ISI, he studied business engineering and management at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, specializing in process and environmental technology. He earned his doctorate from RWTH Aachen University, focusing on 'Analysis and Evaluation of Industrial Energy Efficiency Measures' under Prof. Walther.
His work includes projects like BETTED (Boosting Energy Transition in Dairy Value Chains), ICCEE (Improving Cold Chain Efficiency), and evaluations of Germany's Federal Funding Scheme for Energy Efficiency. His recent publications address policy impacts, decarbonization strategies, and integrated energy demand modeling.
Key projects include analyzing energy efficiency in cold supply chains, CO2-neutral process heat solutions, and policy frameworks for industrial decarbonization. His contributions span technical assessments, policy design, and cross-sector collaborations to advance energy sustainability globally.
