Simon George is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University, specializing in organic geochemistry. He leads the organic geochemistry group and has held roles such as Interim Head of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Director of the Macquarie University Marine Research Centre. His research focuses on biomarkers, petroleum geochemistry, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction using organic geochemical signatures. He has over 35 years of experience, including 15 years at CSIRO.
Education: BSc (Hons) from the University of St Andrews, PhD from Newcastle University. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students and teaches courses in geochemistry, marine geoscience, and paleoenvironments. His lab work involves advanced techniques like pyrolysis and fluid inclusion analysis. Key projects include studies on the Messinian salinity crisis, Cambrian stromatolites, and thermal maturity in the Sydney Basin.
Research interests span biomarker analysis, sedimentary basin evolution, and astrobiological applications of geochemical signatures. He has organized major conferences, including the Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference. His publications exceed 440 articles, with a focus on Paleocene climate, microbial interactions, and deep-time organic matter preservation.
