Erdem Idiz is a Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford, specializing in organic geochemistry and sedimentary processes. His research focuses on the fate of organic carbon in sedimentary records, employing biomarkers and stable isotope proxies for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. He investigates factors controlling the formation of organic-rich source rocks and their conversion to hydrocarbons, as well as diagenetic changes in biomolecules. His work spans terrestrial, lacustrine, and marine environments, emphasizing evolving biota and geochemical interactions.
Idiz has contributed to studies on mercury behavior in hydrocarbon source rocks, geochemical cyclicity in carbonate rocks, and carbon burial dynamics during anoxic events. He has held editorial roles, including co-editor-in-chief of Organic Geochemistry and past chair of the Geochemical Society’s Organic Geochemistry Division. His interdisciplinary research integrates organic and inorganic geochemistry, with applications to petroleum geology and paleoclimatology.
Key findings include insights into thermal maturation effects on mercury partitioning, sedimentary diagenesis, and modeling fracture initiation in source rocks. His work bridges geological timescales and modern environmental challenges, emphasizing the interplay between biotic and abiotic processes in sedimentary systems.
