RWI — Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschungمعرفی
Prof. Dr. Simon Ebbinghaus serves as Research Professor at Ruhr University Bochum within the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He leads the Biophysical Chemistry Research Group, which operates from ZEMOS (Center for Medical Biotechnology), with physical location in room ZEMOS 0.95. His institutional affiliations include the Department of Biophysical Chemistry and the university's Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Research focuses on biomolecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically protein misfolding and aggregation processes. The group pioneers live-cell imaging techniques to observe these reactions with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution directly within biological environments. Key research areas include protein dynamics in neurodegeneration, advanced microscopy methodologies, and biophysical analysis of pathological aggregation pathways. This work bridges fundamental biophysical chemistry with translational medical applications.
The laboratory maintains close integration with ZEMOS research infrastructure and collaborates across Ruhr University Bochum's specialized facilities including Zentrale Analytik and RESOLV. The group contributes to doctoral training through the Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry while developing novel approaches for observing intracellular protein behavior relevant to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease mechanisms.
