Simon Downs is a Lecturer in Graphic Communication and Director of the TRACEY: Drawing and Visualisation Research Group at Loughborough University's School of Design and Creative Arts. His research focuses on the intersection of technical, social, cultural, and political systems in visual communication, with particular interests in cybernetics, emergence, and complex adaptive systems. He has authored influential works like The Graphic Communication Handbook (2011) and founded The Poster, a journal exploring political visual culture. Downs has been recognized with the 2011 Loughborough University Lecturer of the Year Award.
Before academia, Downs worked as a freelance designer in London, specializing in digital illustration, animation, and editorial design. His career transitioned to academia in 2000, joining Loughborough in 2003. His research spans typography, sustainable design, political iconography, and the epistemology of visual communication. He actively contributes to design discourse through editorships and union representation, including roles in the UCU union.
Downs' recent work interrogates sustainability in design ethics, the role of graphic design in combating greenwashing, and the application of complex systems theory to artistic practices. His publications reflect a blend of theoretical rigor and practical insights, influencing both academic and industry audiences.
