Simon Dein is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London. He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from University College London (UCL), where he currently teaches as a Senior Lecturer. He is also an honorary clinical professor at Durham University, leading an MSc in Spirituality, Theology and Health. His research focuses on religious healing in Pentecostalism, mental health in Islamic contexts, prophecy in Jewish millennialism, and the psychology of atheism.
Dein's academic qualifications include the FRCPsych (Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2014) and a PhD from UCL (1999). He is a consultant psychiatrist in Essex, specializing in rehabilitation and liaison psychiatry. He serves as Chair of the Spirituality Section of the World Association of Cultural Psychiatry and is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Spirituality and Psychiatry Special Interest Group Executive Committee.
His publications include seminal works such as Lubavitcher Messianism (2011) and Culture and Cancer Care (2005). He is the founding editor of the journal Mental Health, Religion and Culture and has edited key texts in cultural psychiatry. His research bridges anthropology, psychiatry, and theology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding religion and health.
Dein advises students such as Tim Trodd and collaborates on projects addressing global mental health and spirituality. His work has been recognized through academic awards and editorial roles, cementing his influence in cultural psychiatry and religious studies.
