Simon Clark is the Helmut Ecker Endowed Professor of AMD at the University of Tübingen and holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms driving age-related macular degeneration (AMD), particularly the role of the complement system in disease progression and therapeutic modulation. He co-founded the Manchester Eye Tissue Repository, a critical resource for eye disease research. Clark earned a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Aberdeen and a D.Phil. from Oxford University.
Education:
- B.Sc. (Hons) Biochemistry with Immunology, University of Aberdeen (2002)
- D.Phil. (Oxon) Biochemistry, University of Oxford (2003-2006)
Research Interests: Clark investigates the complement system’s role in AMD, developing novel complement modifiers and diagnostic tools. His work includes characterizing Bruch’s membrane’s role in AMD pathogenesis and identifying FHL-1 as a key complement regulator in retinal tissues.
Awards:
- Helmut Ecker Endowed Professorship (2019)
- Macula Society Rising Star Award (2018)
- MRC Career Development Fellowship (2013)
Advising & Grants: Co-founded Complement Therapeutics (CTX), which raised €77 million in funding. Advises on therapeutic strategies for complement-driven diseases.
