معرفی
Nigel Barnett is an Associate Professor at the Clem Jones Centre for Regenerative Medicine, Bond University. He holds honorary positions at the University of Queensland and Queensland Eye Institute. His research focuses on retinal degenerative diseases, particularly macular degeneration and glaucoma, with an emphasis on neuroprotective strategies using antioxidants and silk-based therapies. He has over 90 research outputs and is actively involved in collaborative research globally.
Education:
- D.Phil. in Vision Science, University of Oxford (1995)
- M.Sc. in Vision Science, University of Oxford (1991)
- B.Sc. (Hons) in Physiology, University of Sheffield (1987)
Research Interests: Retinal degeneration mechanisms, antioxidant therapies, neuroprotection, stem cell therapies, and biomaterial applications in ophthalmology. His work investigates novel therapeutic agents (e.g., nitroxide antioxidants) and silk extracts to mitigate vision loss.
Key Contributions:
- Developed rat models for choroidal neovascularization and AMD biomarker studies
- Pioneered studies on Müller glia metabolism and its impact on photoreceptor health
- Advanced stem cell therapies for retinal regeneration
Awards:
- NHMRC RD Wright Fellowship (2003)
Collaborations: Active partnerships with institutions in Australia, Asia, and Europe. Supervises PhD students and contributes to peer review for journals like Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
Labs/Teams: Leads research in the Clem Jones Centre for Regenerative Medicine, focusing on translational approaches to retinal diseases.
