Simon Birnbaum is an Associate Professor in Political Science at Södertörn University. His research focuses on normative political theory, comparative welfare state research, and sustainable welfare policies. He coordinates the Bachelor's Program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Södertörn University.
Before joining Södertörn University in 2018, Birnbaum worked at Stockholm University's Department of Political Science, where he completed his PhD in 2008. He has also been a visiting doctoral student at the University of Oxford and held research positions at institutions including UCL's Hoover Chair, the Stein Rokkan Centre, and the Institute for Futures Studies.
Birnbaum's research explores themes like basic income as a tool for social justice, intergenerational equity, environmental governance legitimacy, and sustainable welfare systems. His work often intersects political theory, ethics, and policy analysis, examining how welfare institutions can address precarious employment, ecological challenges, and democratic participation.
