Silvio de Barros

Silvio de Barros serves as Research Director at CESI (HESAM University) in Saint-Nazaire, France, leading the “Integration of materials and processes” research theme. He teaches Mechanics and RDM to engineering students across all academic levels while maintaining active research in materials science. Previously, he held professorial positions at CEFET/RJ and UFPB in Brazil.

De Barros specializes in mechanics of materials with emphasis on composite structures, adhesive bonding, and durability analysis. His research integrates numerical simulation and experimental methods to study aging, fatigue, and creep phenomena in advanced materials. Current work explores geopolymers and bio-based composites for sustainable engineering applications, particularly relevant to oil industry challenges and environmental resilience.

His publication portfolio reveals consistent focus on adhesively bonded joints, with recent work examining environmental degradation effects and failure mechanisms. The research trajectory shows evolution from fundamental bond mechanics toward practical applications in composite repairs and sustainable material systems.

He actively supervises 16 doctoral candidates (12 completed, 4 ongoing) and has mentored 4 post-doctoral researchers.
