Silvio Gualdi

Dr. Silvio Gualdi serves as Principal Scientist and Division Director of the Earth System Modelling and Data Assimilation Division at the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), where he leads climate modeling initiatives and operational forecasting systems. He concurrently holds the position of Primo ricercatore at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), demonstrating dual institutional leadership in climate science research.

His academic foundation includes a Physics degree from the University of Modena, Italy, and a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Hamburg, Germany, establishing a robust theoretical background for his 25+ years of climate research. These qualifications underpin his expertise in developing sophisticated climate models and prediction systems.

Gualdi's research centers on advancing climate modeling capabilities across temporal scales from seasonal to decadal. His work integrates Earth system science with practical climate services, focusing on Mediterranean climate dynamics, extreme event prediction, and multi-model ensemble approaches. Key contributions include developing the SINTEX, INGV-SXG, and CMCC-CM climate models used in major international frameworks like CMIP3 and CMIP5, with particular emphasis on improving prediction skill for temperature extremes, precipitation patterns, and ocean-atmosphere interactions in vulnerable regions.
