Dr. Sebastian Brune is a Research Scientist in Climate Modelling at the Institute of Oceanography within the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) at the University of Hamburg. He leads climate simulation projects using MPI-ESM and ICON models on DKRZ supercomputers, collaborating with MPI-M, Hereon, DWD, and European partners. His work focuses on decadal prediction systems, data assimilation (EnKF), and supporting early-career researchers.
Education:
- PhD (2012): Leibniz Institute for Atmospheric Physics, Rostock
- Geophysics Diploma (2000): Technical University of Clausthal
Research Interests: Climate system modeling, data assimilation techniques, large ensemble predictions (seasonal to decadal), and Earth system interactions. Current projects include the German Climate Forecasting System (GCFS), decadal prediction systems (MPI-ESM-LR), and CMIP7/CAP7 initiatives.
Key Projects:
- Operational seasonal forecasts (Copernicus Climate Change Service)
- Ensemble assimilation system development
- Arctic permafrost erosion impacts
Awards: No specific awards listed, but contributes to high-impact collaborative projects.
Grants & Advising: Manages large-scale computational resources for climate models. Supports student research activities through mentorship and infrastructure provision.
Labs/Teams: Part of the MPI-ESM development team and German climate modeling community networks.
