Silvia Ross

Professor Silvia Ross is Head of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at University College Cork (UCC), where she also holds a Professorship in Italian. She has served as Head of the Department of Italian (2018–2021) and previously as Associate Dean and Head of the Graduate School (2011–2013). Ross earned her BA in Italian and French from the University of Toronto (1989), MA (1992), and PhD (1996) in Italian Literature from Johns Hopkins University. She has held visiting roles at Duke University and taught at UCC since 1996.
Her research focuses on Tuscan literature, space, identity, ecocriticism, and the Holocaust. Major works include Tuscan Spaces: Literary Constructions of Place (2010) and the forthcoming Subverted Sites: Textual Representations of Conflict in Tuscany (2025). She co-founded the Cross-disciplinary Approaches to Urban Space Network and edited volumes such as Identity and Conflict in Tuscany (2015).
Notable awards include the Irish Research Council Ally Prize (2021) and UCC’s Research Supervisor of the Year (2020). Her articles explore themes like gender, urban space, and environmental crises, with recent work on Silvia Avallone’s industrial narratives and ecofeminist readings of Florentine ruins. Ross has led grants totaling over €1.2 million, including studies on Tuscan bestiaries and Alpine frontiers.
