Silvia Giordani

Prof. Silvia Giordani is a Full Professor of Nanomaterials at the School of Chemical Sciences, Dublin City University (DCU), where she served as Head of School from 2020 to 2023. She is also a Principal Investigator at the Life Science Institute (LSI) and hosted at the Institute Charles Gerhardt Montpellier until July 2025. Her research focuses on designing and synthesizing nanomaterials for biomedical, energy, and environmental applications, including carbon nano-onions (CNOs) for drug delivery, imaging, and catalysis.

• Education: PhD in Chemistry (University of Miami, 2004), M.Sc. Chemistry (University of Miami, 2001), Laurea in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (University of Milan, 1999).
• Affiliations: Previously Research Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), founding director of the Nano Carbon Materials Lab at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), and Associate Professor at the University of Turin.

Research Interests: Supramolecular materials, carbon-based nanomaterials, drug delivery systems, biocompatibility studies, and nanotoxicology. Her work emphasizes translating nanomaterials into practical solutions for healthcare and sustainability.

Prof. Giordani has authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications, with >10,000 citations, and holds multiple awards, including the President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (2007) and MAK’IT Fellowship (2024). She has supervised over 50 students across PhD, MSc, and BSc levels, focusing on nanomaterial synthesis, functionalization, and biomedical applications.

• Key Projects: €1.2M grant for bio-inspired nanoplatforms in drug delivery, development of CNO-based nanocarriers for cancer therapy, and green synthesis of carbon dots from coffee waste.
• Lab & Teams: Leads the Giordani Group at DCU, collaborating internationally on nanomedicine and environmental nanotechnology.
