Silvia Dragoni is a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Brighton's School of Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Centre for Lifelong Health. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Physiology from the University of Pavia, Italy, followed by postdoctoral research at UMass Lowell (USA), UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and KU Leuven (Belgium). She holds an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Her research focuses on vascular biology, particularly the molecular mechanisms regulating blood-retinal barrier function and dysfunction, with an emphasis on calcium signaling pathways and TRP channels. Key projects include studying VEGF-induced vascular permeability and the role of Neuropilin-1 in neurovascular dysfunction. She has secured grants from Diabetes UK and Moorfields Eye Charity, including an 18-month Career Development Award (2022).
Teaching roles include leading the Intermediate Blood Sciences module and contributing to lab activities in Physiology and Cellular Pathology. She emphasizes creativity and innovation in education, fostering problem-solving and inquiry-based learning.
