Silvia Cappello

Dr. Silvia Cappello is an Associate Professor at the Biomedical Center of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich) in the Department of Physiological Genomics. Her research focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cortical malformations in the human neocortex, which are linked to developmental disabilities and severe epilepsies.

Dr. Cappello's lab investigates neurogenesis, neuronal migration, and maturation using mouse models and human cerebral organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem cells and patient fibroblasts. Her work emphasizes identifying gene networks and pathways responsible for cortical malformations to develop therapeutic strategies such as gene re-expression or cytoskeleton modulation. She also explores RNA sequencing and proteomics to define functional differences between neural cell populations.

The lab's recent publications highlight research on brain organoids, neurodevelopmental disorders, glucocorticoid signaling, extracellular vesicles, and synaptic plasticity in the context of cortical malformations and epilepsy. Dr. Cappello does not plan to accept PhD students in 2026.
