Silvestro Greco is a marine biologist and Full Professor at the Università degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche, specializing in sustainable marine resource management and biodiversity conservation. He holds leadership roles in institutional relations and directs the Sustainability and Circular Economy Lab. His career includes over 100 scientific expeditions, including Antarctic research under the PNRA program (1989–2000), and leadership positions at ICRAM, ISPRA, and the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn.
Education: Graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Messina. Key research areas include coastal resource management, aquaculture innovation, fishery policy, and deep-sea biodiversity. He pioneered projects like the 'Afrodite System' for marine protected areas and led the MoBIOMARCAL biodiversity monitoring program in Calabrian seas.
Research focuses on microplastics, cetacean acoustics, offshore wind farm sustainability, and invasive species. He is a member of CIESM and the Italian Oceanographic Commission, and served as Calabria’s Regional Minister for the Environment (2008–2010). With over 180 publications, including books and international journal articles, he advocates for policy-science integration in coastal management.
Scientific awards include Commander and Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Current activities include assessing environmental impacts of offshore energy projects and promoting marine conservation through interdisciplinary research.
