Professor Silke Roth is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology. Her research focuses on intersections of political sociology and work sociology, emphasizing inequality in organizations. She has held roles including DAAD Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania (2000–2005) and currently serves as Editor of The Sociological Review.
Her education includes a PhD in Sociology from the University of Connecticut (1997), followed by research roles at the Bauhaus University Weimar and the Free University Berlin. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research interests center on activism, humanitarianism, gender studies, and military sociology. Key projects include ESRC-funded studies on military-civilian career transitions and British Academy grants exploring gender in post-communist countries. Her recent work examines ICT impacts on social movements and humanitarian practices.
Publications span 2023–2025, addressing topics like data privacy in social media, humanitarian inequality frameworks, and military-civilian collaboration. She supervises PhD students in sociology and social policy and teaches courses on comparative sociology, gender studies, and migration.
