Silke Meyer is Professor of European Ethnology at the University of Innsbruck, where she has been a core faculty member since 2010. Originally from Reutlingen, Germany, she relocated to Tyrol after establishing her academic career.
Her educational journey includes:
- Initial enrollment in Art History, Romance Studies, and English at the University of Tübingen
- Pivotal shift to Empirical Cultural Studies after encountering Professor Hermann Bausinger's lecture
- Doctoral research on national iconography and identity construction
Professor Meyer's scholarly focus examines how individuals organize within social groups and environments through the lens of European Ethnology. Her work interrogates everyday phenomena and cultural security needs, particularly exploring the tension between familiar lowland German landscapes and Tyrolean mountainous contexts. Her research methodology emphasizes external perspective-taking on commonplace social structures, drawing from her childhood observations as the youngest cousin.
