Siim Sorokin is a Research Fellow in Cultural Studies and Digital Narratology at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, currently serving in a part-time (0.50 FTE) role since January 2028. He holds a PhD in Folkloristics (2018) and has been affiliated with the University of Tartu since 2010, progressing from a PhD student to his current position. His research focuses on the socio-cultural reception of narratives in digital environments, particularly conspiracy theories and communal storytelling in social media, alongside externalist philosophy of mind and narrative character engagement.
Education includes a PhD in Folkloristics (2018), MA in Estonian and Comparative Folklore (2010), and BA in the same field (2007). He has taught courses such as 'Introduction to Cognitive Humanities' and 'Film Language and Theory', and supervised Liina Reimus' BA thesis on film adaptation.
Research interests span cultural studies, folklore, digital humanities, and narrative theory. His work examines topics like conspiracy discourse dynamics, communal sense-making in social media, and the materiality of narrative representations. Notable publications include studies on the MV Estonia shipwreck narratives and Breaking Bad's digital reception.
He has participated in numerous international conferences and projects, including the 'Meaning-Making in Social Media' (2025–2027) and 'Experimental Cultures of the 1980s-2020s' (2024–2027). Administrative roles include reviewer for Humanities and membership in the International Society for the Study of Narrative.
