Siguru Wahutu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. His research focuses on two primary streams: the sociology of knowledge and media, particularly addressing genocide, mass violence, and ethnicity in sub-Saharan Africa, and the intersection of data privacy, media manipulation, and social media experimentation in Kenya. He has published in journals like African Affairs, Sociological Forum, and Journalism Studies, with ongoing book projects for both research areas.
His work critically examines global media narratives about Africa, emphasizing how knowledge is constructed and disseminated. Key themes include the role of place and context in journalism studies, postcolonial media dynamics, and the challenges of covering atrocities like the 1994 Rwandan genocide and Darfur conflict. He also explores contemporary issues such as digital entrepreneurship in Africa and the evolving landscape of Kenyan newsrooms in the digital age.
Wahutu’s publications reflect a commitment to rethinking traditional frameworks in media studies, advocating for African-centric perspectives while addressing global challenges like fake news and data privacy. His scholarship bridges sociological theory with empirical analysis, offering critical insights into media’s role in shaping and reflecting sociopolitical realities in Africa.
