Dr. Sigrid Vertommen is a Research Fellow at Ghent University's Department of Languages and Cultures and affiliated with the Centre for Research on Culture and Gender (CRCG). She holds additional affiliations with the Sociology Department at the University of Amsterdam. Trained as a historian and political scientist, her research examines the political economy of global fertility chains through intersectional frameworks combining racial capitalism, colonialism, and heteropatriarchy.
Her primary research investigates:
- Transnational surrogacy markets in Palestine/Israel and Georgia
- Decolonial feminist approaches to assisted reproduction
- Dialectics of waged/unwaged reproductive labor
- Historical development of reproductive bioeconomies
