Sigrid Sterckx serves as Professor of Ethics and Political and Social Philosophy at Ghent University's Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences. She is a founding member of the bioethics Institute Ghent and maintains affiliate positions as a permanent research associate at the University of Oxford's Centre for Health, Law, and Emerging Technologies and as an associate member of the University of Birmingham's Centre for the Study of Global Ethics.
Her research spans bioethics and ethical theory with active projects on end-of-life decisions, human tissue research, biobanking, biomedical patenting, genomics, organ transplantation, neuro-ethics, and global justice frameworks addressing climate change and economic governance. She has authored over 130 publications including co-authored works Exclusions from Patentability: How far has the European Patent Office eroded boundaries? (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and co-edited Continuous Sedation at the End of Life: Ethical, Clinical and legal perspectives (Cambridge University Press, 2013).
Sterckx provides critical policy guidance through her service on the Belgian Advisory Committee on Bioethics (advising the Federal Government of Belgium) and the Ethics Committee of Ghent University Hospital, directly influencing national bioethics legislation and clinical practices.
