Sigrid Nikka is a Doctoral student and Researcher at Lund University's Faculty of Law, Department of Law, affiliated with the Criminal Law and Law and Vulnerabilities research groups. Her work critically examines the boundaries of criminal law through investigations of penalty legitimization and sentencing frameworks in contemporary Swedish justice systems.
Nikka's research spans crime policy, prison law, penalties and sentencing, penal value, and proportionality, employing discourse analysis, genealogy, and WPR methodologies. Her doctoral project 'Straffskärpningar och straffrättens gränser' (Tougher penalties and the boundaries of criminal law) analyzes how increasingly severe penalties are justified within legal frameworks and societal contexts.
Analysis of her 2024-2025 publications reveals concentrated focus on Swedish criminal justice reforms, particularly repression level trends (2010-2023), proportionality crises in sentencing, and critiques of irrational policies like lowering criminal responsibility age. Her work consistently bridges theoretical discourse with practical legal consultation, emphasizing fairness in penalty systems.
Nikka teaches criminal law to undergraduate and advanced students while delivering specialized courses on law and gender for interdisciplinary cohorts. She actively supervises writing assignments within Lund's law program, guiding students through research methodology and academic writing processes.
As an engaged academic, she participates in Nordic research networks through presentations at the Nordic Law and Gender Conference, Nordisk workshop i straffrätt, and public debates on crime policy. Her membership on a journal editorial board demonstrates commitment to scholarly discourse, while her research directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to justice systems.
