Prof. Dr. Sigrid Elsenbruch is a faculty member at Ruhr University Bochum, serving as Deputy Spokesperson of the Research Department of Neuroscience and affiliated with the Department of Medical Psychology & Medical Sociology under the Faculty of Medicine. Her research explores the neural mechanisms of interoception, focusing on how the brain processes visceral and somatic pain signals and how stress, expectations, and learning influence these processes.
Her work bridges basic neuroscience and clinical applications, investigating the gut-brain axis in chronic pain and affective disorders. Using functional MRI, behavioral experiments, and patient studies, she examines inflammation's role in pain perception and develops translational models in collaboration with RUB departments and international institutions.
Key themes in her publications include neuroinflammation, fear conditioning, placebo/nocebo effects, and sex differences in pain processing. Her research spans 2015–2023, with studies on visceral pain's neural representation, stress-induced hyperalgesia, and cerebellar involvement in pain differentiation.
