Prof. Siewert-Jan Marrink is a Professor of Molecular Dynamics at the University of Groningen (UG), leading the Molecular Dynamics Group within the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB). He specializes in multiscale molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecular processes, particularly using the MARTINI force field. His academic roles include heading the Berendsen Centre and serving on editorial boards of journals like the Biophysical Journal and Journal of Chemical Theory & Computation.
Education: PhD in Biophysics (1994, UG), MSc in Natural Sciences (1989, UG). Research focuses on lipid membranes, viral structures, and protein dynamics. Awards include two ERC Advanced Grants (€2.5M each) and an Honorary Doctorate from Polytechnic University Bucharest (2020).
He has supervised 30 PhD students, 25 postdocs, and 25 MSc students. Key activities include organizing the Martini Workshop series and developing online tutorials. Current grants include an NWO TOP Grant (€780k) and an ERC Advanced Grant (2022–2028).
