Prof. Giovanni Maglia is a Full Professor of Chemical Biology at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB). He also serves as Founder and Scientific Director of Portal Biotech, a spin-off from the University of Groningen. His academic career includes roles as Associate Professor (2014–2020) and Assistant Professor (2010–2014) at the University of Leuven and University of Leuven/Chemistry Department, respectively.
Education:
- PhD in Chemistry, University of Birmingham (2000–2004)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Oxford under Prof. H. Bayley (2006–2010)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Leuven under Prof. Y. Engelborghs (2005)
Research: The Maglia Lab focuses on the chemistry and biophysics of nanopores, engineering them for applications in nanobiotechnology and single-molecule biophysics. Key areas include single-molecule enzymology, protein sequencing, and nanopore-based sensing. Collaborations with the Tych Lab further advance nanopore design and neuromorphic computing.
Notable Achievements:
- Recipient of ERC Proof of Concept Grant (2024) for improving heart failure patient monitoring
- Lead developer of nanopore technologies for protein sequencing and biomolecular analysis
- Co-founder of Portal Biotech, advancing nanopore-based diagnostic tools
Labs/Teams: The Maglia Lab and Tych Lab collaborate on projects such as portable nanopore analyzers and synthetic cell membrane engineering. Research is anchored at the GBB Institute in Groningen.
