Sierd Cloetingh is Utrecht University Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Earth Sciences, and part-time Professor of Basin Tectonics at Delft University of Technology. He is President of Academia Europaea (2014-2020), former Vice-President of the European Research Council, and former President of the European Geophysical Society and the International Lithosphere Programme.
Education:
- BSc Geology (Physics & Mathematics), University of Groningen, 1972
- MSc Geophysics (cum laude), Utrecht University, 1977
- PhD Geophysics, Utrecht University, 1982
Research interests span solid-Earth geophysics, tectonics, intraplate deformation, lithospheric dynamics, sedimentary-basin evolution and sea-level change. He investigates how deep-Earth processes interact with surface systems, using numerical modelling, basin analysis, and seismic and potential-field data. His TOPO-EUROPE programme integrates geodynamics with societal challenges such as geothermal energy and climate-driven landscape change.
Scientific awards include the Arthur Holmes Medal, Stephan Mueller Medal, Emil Wiechert Medal, Leopold von Buch Medal, Van Waterschot van der Gracht Medal, Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and Knight of the Royal Order of the Netherlands Lion. He is (foreign) member of nine science academies and holds six honorary doctorates.
Advising & grants: Promotor of ~80 PhD theses; principal investigator in the Netherlands Research School of Sedimentary Geology (NSG) and the Integrated Solid Earth Sciences (ISES) centre; coordinator of EUROBASIN Research School and TOPO-EUROPE; former Scientific Director of NSG (1992-2012) and Chair of the Netherlands ILP committee.
Labs & teams: Earth Simulation Lab, Utrecht University; Netherlands Research Centre for Integrated Solid Earth Sciences (ISES, Chair since 2002); TOPO-EUROPE research network (Coordinator since 2005); EUROBASIN Research School (Chair since 1996).
