Sidse Carroll is a Research Fellow at the Royal College of Art's Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design within the School of Design. She specializes in ageing research with particular focus on participatory design methods and co-creation processes involving older populations. Her work explores how design can serve as an enabler for older people to shape their environments and influence future development.
Education:
- PhD, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen (2020)
- Master of Arts in Architecture, Aarhus School of Architecture (2011)
Carroll's research centers on participatory and collaborative design practices that give older people agency in shaping age-friendly environments. She investigates the spatial aspects of growing old across homes, neighborhoods and public spaces, with particular interest in how design processes can nuance and update societal perceptions of ageing. Her work emphasizes bringing older people's resources and expertise into design disciplines through co-design methodologies.
Her publications from 2017-2020 reveal a consistent focus on community-based participatory design approaches, with geographical scope spanning Denmark, Greenland, and Hong Kong. The research demonstrates methodological innovation in engaging older populations, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, in urban planning processes. Carroll's work bridges design theory and practical community applications to create more inclusive environments for ageing populations.
Carroll leads work at the Design Age Institute (2020), collaborating with Oxford Institute of Population Ageing and Newcastle University's National Innovation Centre for Ageing. Previously, she worked on the 'Ageing in a Vertical City' project (2017) with Hong Kong Polytechnic University, focusing on care home design opportunities. Her research demonstrates strong international collaboration and practical application of design thinking to address complex ageing challenges in diverse urban contexts.
