Sidney M. Milkis is the White Burkett Miller Professor in the Department of Politics at the University of Virginia, a position reflecting his distinguished academic and teaching career. He was awarded the Cavaliers’ Distinguished Teaching Professorship (2018–2020), the university's highest teaching honor, and served as the John G. Winant Visiting Professor of American Government at Oxford University (2016–2017).
His education includes a B.A. from Muhlenberg College and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania.
Milkis's research centers on American political development, presidential leadership, political parties, and democratic theory. He has written extensively on the evolution of American democracy, particularly during the Progressive Era, the New Deal, and the Great Society. His recent work critically examines the challenges posed by contemporary populism and presidentialism to liberal democratic norms. A central theme in his scholarship is the tension and synergy between democratic governance and capitalism, explored through his co-direction of the Project on Democracy and Capitalism.
His recent publications, including books and articles published in 2024 and 2025, focus on Donald Trump’s impact on American democracy, charismatic leadership, and civil rights history. These works reflect a consistent engagement with the fragility and resilience of American constitutional government.
His scientific awards include:
- Cavaliers’ Distinguished Teaching Professorship (2018–2020)
- John G. Winant Visiting Professorship at Oxford (2016–2017)
- Choice Outstanding Title Award (2019)
Milkis is actively involved in research leadership and academic collaboration. As co-director of the Project on Democracy and Capitalism, he secured funding from the Hewlett Foundation to convene a major conference in 2023 on reconciling democracy and markets, with an associated volume forthcoming from Oxford University Press. While no formal advisees are listed, his collaborative work with scholars such as Nicholas Jacobs and Michael Nelson indicates mentorship and scholarly guidance. He has also co-edited significant volumes on 20th-century political reform, contributing to the intellectual infrastructure of the field.
He is co-director of the Project on Democracy and Capitalism, an interdisciplinary university-wide initiative that investigates the historical, philosophical, and policy dimensions of democratic capitalism. The project has organized major conferences and publications, including one funded by the Hewlett Foundation and set for publication by Oxford University Press.
