Sidney Lu is the Annette and Hugh Gragg Associate Professor of Transnational Asian Studies and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Rice University. He specializes in 19th-20th century Japanese and East Asian history, focusing on migration, settler colonialism, gender, and trans-Pacific relations. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2013) and previously taught at Michigan State University.
His research explores the intersections of Japanese colonial expansion, migration patterns, and global imperialism. Major works include The Making of Japanese Settler Colonialism (2019), Japanese Empire and Latin America (2023), and the forthcoming Collaborative Settler Colonialism (2025). He co-founded the Between Asias and Americas book series at University of Pittsburgh Press.
Lu leads the digital exhibition History of Japanese Farmers in Texas, which received the Trailblazer Award (2024). He serves on the editorial board of Settler Colonial Studies and mentors undergraduate research projects through Rice’s Fondren Fellows program. His teaching spans modern Japan, East Asia, and Asian American history.
Research interests emphasize settler colonialism’s global dimensions, particularly how migration dynamics shaped Japanese imperial projects in Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific. Current work examines Sino-Japanese colonial struggles in Southeast Asia.
