Sibel Erol is a Clinical Professor at the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University. Her academic career spans roles including teaching Turkish language and literature courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley (1993), alongside an M.A. in English from the same institution, and prior qualifications from Bogaziçi University.
Her research focuses on Turkish literature, with emphasis on women authors (Halide Edib Adivar, Adalet Agaoglu), modern Turkish nationalism, postmodernism, and gender studies. She has edited books on Orhan Pamuk’s works and contributed essays to major publications like the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Women. Her recent publications explore questions of Turkish literary identity through analyses of Leyla Erbil and other authors.
Erol teaches a range of Turkish language courses emphasizing communicative skills and cultural immersion. Her advanced courses introduce students to Turkish literary canons and film studies through seminar-style engagement. She has also authored introductions for literary translations and appeared in documentary films about Turkish authors.
