Dr. Si Chen is a Researcher in the Department of Biomaterials at Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín, Slovakia, specializing in biomaterials development for regenerative medicine. With expertise in surface modification techniques, bioactive glasses, and drug delivery systems, Dr. Chen contributes to the FunGlass Centre for Functional and Surface Functionalized Glass, an international research initiative funded by Horizon 2020.
Dr. Chen's educational background includes:
- 2015: PhD in Material Science, Key Lab. of Advanced Technology for Materials of Education Ministry, Southwest Jiaotong University, China
- 2009: MS in Biomedical Engineering, Key Lab. of Advanced Technology for Materials of Education Ministry, Southwest Jiaotong University, China
- 2007: BS in Pharmaceutical Engineering, School of Pharmacy, Southwest Jiaotong University, China
Research focuses on developing advanced biomaterials through surface modification of biomaterials, polyphenol chemistry, sol-gel methods, flame synthesis, and conventional melt quenching. Key applications include vascular endothelialisation, anticoagulation, immunomodulation, bone regeneration, angiogenesis, and antibacterial/anti-inflammatory therapies. Current work emphasizes multi-functional biomaterials that address multiple clinical challenges simultaneously through innovative approaches like B and Co co-doped bioactive glasses for enhanced angiogenesis.
Publication trends show consistent contributions to biomaterials science with increasing focus on multi-targeted therapeutic approaches. Recent work demonstrates sophisticated integration of multiple bioactive components within single material systems to achieve synergistic effects for complex tissue regeneration challenges.
Scientific recognition includes:
- NUST "MISiS" International Competition for Grants (2017, Winner)
As a PhD supervisor, Dr. Chen mentors the next generation of biomaterials researchers. Current research projects include:
- VEGA 1/0098/19: Multi-layered bioglass structures for regenerative medicine (2019-2022, Deputy Project Leader)
- SK-CN-21-0022: Multifunctional bioactive coatings for dental implants (2022-2023, Participant)
- APVV-20-0322: Nanostructured 3D Ti-based implants (2021-2025, Participant)
Dr. Chen actively collaborates with international partners including Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, and Università degli Studi di Padova within the FunGlass Centre framework, advancing glass-based biomaterials research with diverse medical applications.
