Dr Siân Brooke is an Assistant Professor and MacGillavry Fellow at the University of Amsterdam's Digital Interactions Lab. With expertise in gender studies and technology, she investigates how digital platforms perpetuate inequality and designs interventions to promote equity. Her work combines political philosophy, sociology, and data science to address discrimination in online spaces, including collaborative coding environments and labour markets.
Education: Completed a DPhil (PhD) at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) as a Clarendon Scholar, supported by the Economic and Social Research Council. Holds a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2022–present) and a Fellowship in Computational Social Science at LSE.
Research Focus: Gendered inequality in technology, online discrimination, memes and identity, hackathon cultures, and platform design justice. Key projects include interventions to reduce bias in online labour markets and analyzing gender differences in Python programming styles.
Awards: Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, Clarendon Scholarship, MacGillavry Fellowship, and ESRC funding. Recognized in media outlets like the New York Times and BBC for her insights on tech equity.
Teaching: Teaches computational methods (Python, R) and social research design at LSE. Runs workshops on ethical data science and computational research.
