Shutong Han is a PhD student in Sociolinguistics at the University of Edinburgh and serves as a Tutor for courses in Sociolinguistics and Discourse Analysis. Their research focuses on language, gender, sexuality, and social media dynamics, particularly exploring identity construction among non-normative groups in China. They combine qualitative methods with blended ethnography to analyze language use in both online and offline contexts.

Research interests emphasize intersectionality, queer theories, and the philosophy of love. Their work examines how marginalized communities navigate conservative spaces, leveraging platforms like Douyin and RED to reshape cultural narratives. Recent projects include analyzing 'sajiao' performances among Chinese gay influencers and the recontextualization of Nvshu in digital feminism.
Publications and presentations highlight themes of linguistic subversion, identity negotiation, and digital activism. Collaborations include work with Ashley Xing on Affective Digital Feminism in China and organizing the Queer Identities in Contemporary China conference.
