Shuk Han Cheng

Professor Shuk Han Cheng is a Chair Professor of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Department of Materials Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong, and serves as Executive Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS). She earned a BSc (Hons) in Zoology from the University of Hong Kong and a PhD from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (now part of Imperial College London), focusing on cellular immune responses to BCG vaccination under Prof. Denny Mitchison. She conducted postdoctoral research on T-cell molecular immunity at the Ontario Cancer Institute under Prof. Tak Mak.

Her research spans Toxicology, Molecular Immunology, and Biomedical Sciences, with innovations in non-animal in vivo testing and transgenic biomonitoring systems. She has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles, including Science Direct’s Top 25 Hottest Articles, and ranks among the top 2% of most cited scientists in Toxicology (Elsevier, 2020–2023) with an H-index of 45.

She has received numerous accolades for inventions at international exhibitions, including the 2015 WIPO Medal and Grand Prix. Her community service includes advisory roles in Hong Kong’s immigration, education, and scholarship schemes. She serves on the Editorial Board of Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine and chairs the Technical Committee at Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI).
