Shotaro Kumagai

Shotaro Kumagai serves as a Visiting Fellow at the Australia-Japan Research Centre within the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University, while concurrently working as an economist at Japan Research Institute (JRI). With over a decade of macroeconomic research experience, he specializes in Thailand, India, and ASEAN-focused economic analysis for Japanese governmental and corporate stakeholders.

His academic foundation includes:

• M.A. in Economics from The University of Tokyo
• B.A. in Economics from Sophia University

Research interests emphasize regional macroeconomic dynamics across Southeast and South Asia, particularly Thailand's economic policy frameworks, India's developmental trajectory, and ASEAN integration challenges. Professional experience encompasses secondments at Japan's Economic and Social Research Institute (Cabinet Office, 2011-2012) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation in Singapore (2015-2017), demonstrating cross-institutional collaboration between research, government, and financial sectors.
