Shorna B. Allred is a distinguished academic holding the Susan R. Wolf Distinguished Professorship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an Adjunct Professor at Cornell University. She is affiliated with Cornell's Center for Conservation Social Sciences, Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, and Department of Global Development. Her research focuses on global sustainability, conservation decision-making, community resilience, and environmental justice, with significant engagement in Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysian Borneo and Thailand. Allred is also recognized for her leadership roles, including former Associate Director of the Center for Conservation Social Sciences and Core Faculty in Cornell's Southeast Asia Program.
Education: Dr. Allred earned her Ph.D. in Forest Social Science from Oregon State University, and her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Penn State University in Environmental Resource Management and Natural Resource Education, respectively.
Research & Engagement: Her work integrates social science to enhance community-based conservation strategies, including participatory methodologies with Indigenous communities. She leads the Global Citizenship and Sustainability program, fostering cross-cultural engagement and resilience practices. Notable projects include flood resilience studies in Bangkok and agroforestry initiatives in Haiti.
Awards: Recognitions include the 2021 Rising Star Faculty Award, 2019 SUNY Chancellor’s Award, and the 2018 Engaged Scholar Prize. She received the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Exemplary Designation for the Rust to Green initiative.
Advising & Grants: Allred has advised over 20 graduate students and secured grants for community-based research. Current initiatives address climate migration equity and policies for minority landowners in the Northeast.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with the Center for Conservation Social Sciences, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and global partners to advance interdisciplinary conservation strategies.
