Dr Shoba Arun is a Reader in Work and Organisation Studies at the University of Essex’s Essex Business School, where she has held this position since 2023. Previously, she spent 22 years in academic roles at Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Greenwich, and the University of Ulster, contributing to research, teaching, and leadership. Her work focuses on the sociology of work, global migration, gender inequalities, and modern slavery, with a particular focus on emerging economies like India and Africa.
She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and an M.Phil from the Centre for Development Studies. Her research explores transformative work practices, intersectional inequalities, and the impact of global processes such as migration and digital technology on labor markets. Notable projects include a UKRI-funded study examining worker autonomy in garment sectors of Leicester and Dhaka to strengthen anti-slavery legislation.
Shoba’s research output includes over 28 journal articles and two monographs, including Development and Gender Capital in India (2018) and the co-edited Global Migration and Diversity of Educational Experiences (2023). She has been funded by the ESRC, Nuffield Foundation, and EU Horizon 2020, and serves on editorial boards for journals like Work, Employment & Society.
Her supervision areas include global work transformations, migrant workers’ professions, intersectional inequalities, and modern slavery compliance. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and actively contributes to professional associations like the British Sociological Association.
