Shiwang Cheng

Shiwang Cheng is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (ChEMS) at Michigan State University's College of Engineering. He serves as the ChE Graduate Program Advisor. His research focuses on the mechanics and dynamics of polymers and polymer nanocomposites, with applications in energy and environmental fields such as gas separation, desalination, batteries, and supercapacitors. His group explores novel materials design to address emerging challenges in these areas.

Dr. Cheng holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Science from The University of Akron (2013) and a B.E. in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (2009). He has received notable awards, including the Frank J. Padden Jr. Award Finalist (2014) and the 2018 Peter Debye Prize for excellence in Dielectric Research.

His research interests include polymer nanocomposite dynamics, fracture mechanics of thermoplastics, and advanced polymer membranes. Recent projects involve interfacial polymer dynamics, ion transport in polymers, and scalable membrane adsorbents for CO₂ capture. Collaborative efforts emphasize sustainable materials and energy-efficient technologies.
