Shivan Mehta serves as the associate chief innovation officer at Penn Medicine, director of CHTI's Population Health Lab, and an associate professor of medicine and health policy at the Perelman School of Medicine. He is also a clinical gastroenterologist and co-director of quality for the Division of Gastroenterology at Penn Medicine.
Dr. Mehta received his bachelor's degree in economics from Yale University, his medical degree and master's in health policy research from the University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA in health care management from the Wharton School. He completed his residency in internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia and his fellowship in gastroenterology at Penn Medicine.
His research focuses on applying behavioral economics principles to healthcare delivery innovation, particularly in population health outreach and automated patient engagement. Dr. Mehta leads a team developing, evaluating, and implementing healthcare delivery innovations across Penn Medicine, with current projects emphasizing connecting with patients outside traditional clinical venues. His work spans colorectal cancer screening, hypertension management, breast cancer screening, hepatitis C screening, and vaccine outreach, having led and evaluated over 30 pragmatic trials leveraging behavioral science, care redesign, and information technology.
