Shirley Tung is an Associate Professor and Graduate Faculty member in the Department of English at Kansas State University. She holds a Ph.D. from UCLA (2015) and an M.St. from Oxford University (2005). Her research focuses on 17th- and 18th-century British literature, life writing, and gender studies. She is currently completing two books: one on 18th-century travel narratives and identity, and a biography of John Milton's pamphleteering during the English Civil War.

Her work explores intertextuality as literary and socio-cultural critique, spanning genres like criminal biography, travel writing, and print media. She integrates historical artifacts and modern media (e.g., graphic art, podcasts, digital humanities) into teaching to connect 18th-century themes with contemporary issues. Her courses on celebrity culture examine intersections of Enlightenment selfhood, identity performance, and social media narratives.
Dr. Tung has received prestigious awards including the ASECS Innovative Course Design Award (2020-21), Ron Gaches Teaching Award (2020), and multiple fellowships from institutions like the New York Public Library and Oxford University. Her pedagogy emphasizes student-centered archival research, leading to student projects such as digital humanities resources and YouTube documentaries.
Her research has been published in journals including The Age of Johnson, Eighteenth-Century Studies, and Restoration: Studies in Literary Culture. She actively collaborates with institutions like the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing and the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library.
