Juliet Shields is a Professor and Kahn Chair in Humanities at Southern Methodist University. Her research focuses on 18th- and 19th-century Anglophone Atlantic literature, emphasizing print culture, diaspora studies, settler colonialism, and women’s writing. She examines how marginalized authors accessed literary platforms through transnational networks.
Her major works include Mary Prince, Slavery, and Print Culture (2021), Scottish Women’s Writing (2021), Nation and Migration (2016), and Sentimental Literature and Anglo-Scottish Identity (2010). Current projects include a Margaret Oliphant biography and collaborative volumes on Walter Scott’s influence, Scottish studies decolonization, and the Scottish novel.
- Teaching focuses on literary fundamentals, Jane Austen, Romantic nature poetry, and Atlantic narratives of freedom.

Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary critical frameworks, particularly addressing gendered and colonial dimensions of literary production.
