Shiranee Sriskandan is a Clinical Professor of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London and Head of the Section of Adult Infectious Diseases at Hammersmith Hospital. She co-directs the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology (CBRB) and leads the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance. Her research focuses on Streptococcus pyogenes pathogenesis, lymphatic dissemination mechanisms, and vaccine development for invasive infections like necrotizing fasciitis and maternal sepsis. She also investigates emerging bacterial lineages such as M1UK and their global spread. Prof. Sriskandan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Academy of Medical Sciences.
Research interests include streptococcal proteases as vaccine targets, host immune evasion strategies, and post-pandemic changes in infection patterns. She collaborates on rapid diagnostic tools like the Dragonfly platform for monkeypox and bacterial pathogens. Her work bridges clinical practice, molecular epidemiology, and global health initiatives addressing antimicrobial resistance and emerging infections.
Key achievements include leadership in the NIHR HPRU, contributions to understanding S. pyogenes epidemiology, and development of diagnostic innovations. Awards reflect her impact in medical microbiology and clinical research. Grants and collaborations support projects on bacterial resistance, vaccine strategies, and pathogen transmission dynamics.
