Shira Segal is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Film Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she teaches courses in film and engages in research on autobiographical cinema. She has also held a Visiting Scholar position at the Brakhage Center for Media Arts at the University of Colorado at Boulder (2014-2015).
Education:
- PhD in Film and Media Studies from Indiana University’s Department of Communication and Culture
- MA in Cultural Memory from the University of London’s Institute of Romance Studies
- Undergraduate studies in Film Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder
Her research focuses on the intersection of the maternal body, self-representation, and experimental film practices, with archival work on the James Stanley Brakhage Collection. She has published in journals like MP: An Online Feminist Journal and Wig: Journal of Experimental Scholarship, alongside her book chapter on autobiographical cinema. Segal has delivered lectures on Stan Brakhage and First Person Cinema at institutions such as Ohio State University and the University of Washington.
