Hanna Rose Shell serves as Director of the Stan Brakhage Center for Media Arts and is an Associate Professor of Critical and Curatorial Studies, jointly appointed in the Department of Art and Art History and the Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts at the University of Colorado Boulder. She holds core faculty status in the Committee on the History and Philosophy of Science and is affiliated with the Department of History, the Center of the American West, and the Program in Intermedia, Writing, and Performance (IAWP) in the College of Media, Communication, and Information.
Her interdisciplinary research bridges Art and Media History, Cinema Studies, and the History of Science and Technology, with a focus on textiles, photography, and the intersections of visual, material, and scientific cultures. Recent works include Shoddy: From Devil's Dust to the Renaissance of Rags (2020), examining recycled textiles as transformative media, and Hide and Seek: Camouflage, Photography, and the Media of Reconnaissance (2012), which influenced global multimedia projects. She has published in journals like Technology and Culture, Journal of Visual Culture, and Cabinet, and founded the "Beyond Words" section of Technology and Culture.
As a creative practitioner, her experimental films and installations have been showcased globally at institutions such as MoMA, the ZKM Center for Art and Media, and Anthology Film Archives. Her work explores themes of waste, recycling, and visual/material culture through experimental documentary and textile art.
