Shinya Miyazaki is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Protozoology, Institute of Tropical Medicine (NEKKEN), Nagasaki University since April 2024. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor at Nagasaki University's Department of Cellular Architecture Studies (2020-2024) and completed postdoctoral training at Leiden University Medical Center (2017-2020) and Nagasaki University (2012-2017). He holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Tokyo (2012) and is registered as a licensed Pharmacist.
His research focuses on Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites, with key contributions in:
- Molecular mechanisms of cytoadhesion to human cells
- Interactions between infected erythrocytes and bone marrow cells
- Development of genetically modified reporter lines for drug discovery
- Analysis of pathogenicity and transmissibility through field strains
His laboratory has established innovative platforms using NanoLuc reporters for drug assays and received multiple awards including the 2024 NEKKEN Alumni Association Chairman's Award. Scientific funding includes grants from JSPS, AMED, and Takeda Science Foundation.
