Professor Osamu Kaneko is a leading researcher in malaria and protozoology at Nagasaki University's Institute of Tropical Medicine (NEKKEN). He serves as Professor in the Department of Protozoology, Institute of Tropical Medicine, and the Department of Medical Protozoology, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Nagasaki University, Japan. With over two decades of experience in malaria research, Professor Kaneko has established himself as a prominent figure in understanding the molecular mechanisms of malaria parasite biology.
His educational background includes:
- MD from Osaka City University Medical School (1990)
- Two years of orthopedic surgery training
- PhD in Malaria research from Osaka City University's Graduate School of Medicine
- Postdoctoral research at Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases (Louis H. Miller Lab), NIAID, NIH, USA (1997-1999)
Professor Kaneko's research primarily focuses on the molecular mechanisms of malaria parasite invasion of red blood cells and the modification of infected cells. His work centers on understanding the fundamental biology of Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium knowlesi, and Plasmodium yoelii parasites to identify potential targets for intervention. He leads investigations into the mechanisms behind red blood cell (RBC) invasion and cytoadherence of parasite-infected RBCs, utilizing genetic engineering techniques and field studies in malaria-endemic regions of Malaysia, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on molecular mechanisms of parasite invasion, protein export systems, drug resistance, and zoonotic malaria transmission. There is a clear trend toward understanding the detailed molecular interactions between malaria parasites and host cells, with increasing emphasis on translational applications for drug and vaccine development. His work spans from basic molecular biology to field epidemiology, reflecting a comprehensive approach to malaria research.
Professor Kaneko actively supervises graduate students in the Masters Programme at Nagasaki University's School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health. His teaching responsibilities include lectures and practical training on Medical Protozoology covering malaria, African trypanosomiasis, American trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and intestinal protozoan infections. He also leads research within his laboratory team focusing on malaria parasite biology.
His research is supported by international collaborations, including work with Dr. Kamruddin Ahmed at Universiti Malaysia Sabah on P. knowlesi biology and epidemiology, and studies on P. falciparum drug resistance in Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His laboratory serves as a hub for malaria research in Japan, with ongoing projects related to malaria vaccine development against P. falciparum and P. knowlesi.
