Dr Shibin Thomas is a Research Fellow in Electrochemistry at the University of Southampton, specializing in the development of electroplating methods for depositing 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials and their heterostructures. His work bridges materials science, electrochemistry, and nanotechnology to advance semiconductor device fabrication.
His educational background includes an MSc in Physical Chemistry (2010) and an MS in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2013) from Mahatma Gandhi University, India, followed by a PhD in Physics (2017) from Universite de Reims, France. His doctoral research focused on the electrodeposition of silicon/rare earth metals from ionic liquids. Prior to his PhD, he spent a year (2012-2013) at NTT Basic Research Laboratories in Japan working with the Low-Dimensional Nanomaterials group.
Shibin's research interests span Electrochemistry, 2D Materials, Semiconductors, and Heterostructures. His work primarily focuses on developing novel electroplating techniques for depositing transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as WS2, WSe2, and MoS2. His research has significant implications for next-generation optoelectronics, semiconductor devices, and nanoelectronics applications.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on advancing electrodeposition techniques for 2D materials, with particular emphasis on transitioning these methods from laboratory settings to practical applications in electronic device fabrication. His work spans fundamental materials synthesis to applied device development, showing a comprehensive approach to materials innovation.
Shibin has received recognition for his contributions to the field through publications in high-impact journals including Nature Reviews Chemistry, ACS Applied Nano Materials, and 2D Materials.
His collaborative research involves working with multiple institutions and researchers across the UK, with frequent co-authorship with colleagues at the University of Southampton including Philip N. Bartlett, Gillian Reid, and Kees De Groot. His work often intersects with semiconductor physics, nanofabrication, and advanced materials characterization.
